The game is made by Overkill and published by StarBreeze Studios and 505 Games. The title and concept are obviously based on the comic book and tv show of the same name. The game was released in this month (November 2019 when writing this) and will be released in February for consoles. The game has a strong emphasis on cooperative gameplay, like even more than what I expected. The Walking Dead is a great game if you have friends that you can play with. Otherwise, the game will get boring after a couple missions, and the game is a first-person shooter.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead Story and setting

The game follows four characters named Maya, Aiden, Grant, and Heather. The game is set in Washington D.C,  a post-apocalyptic environment which was overrun by zombies, the game also features stealth, survival horror, and role-playing elements.

The creators of Overkill’s The Walking Dead were given permission to have their own interpretation on the source material and create the game with their own vision. Even the creator of the comic books Robert Kirkman was involved in the making of the game, providing advice and feedback. Brand Director Almir Listo said that the game was designed for “adults”, and the story will explore “different things emotionally that aren’t investigated much by the TV show”. Even though it is based in the same universe, the characters are totally original.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead Gameplay

Each four of the characters in the game has unique abilities and skills. Players need to work together to complete all of the objectives. Like I said earlier, the game is focused on cooperation. Things like bullets, food, and water are all very scarce so you will need to work together to survive.

In the game, you need to fight the Walker (zombies) and also other survivors who are willing to do whatever to survive. Just like the TV show, the living is the biggest threat, and the dead are just an annoyance. Each character has their own skills and abilities so you need to think everything through with your teammates. On how to survive, you need to support each other by your characters specific skillset.  Help your team by holding the front line, supporting them with med bags, or killing enemies. And to get these abilities and skills there is a pretty good progression system to level up your character, and camp helping those who are living there.

You can modify your weapons by adding a suppressor to a gun and moving in stealth. Or you could not and go in guns blazing. It all depends on your playstyle. There is also a good amount of scavenging and crafting. So you pick up trash and make it into something useful for the next fight. And the difficulty of the game changes depending upon the level of your character and amount of players playing with you.
